A plea for condensed cities

One of the advantages of compact city building is the safeguarding of green spaces. Unbuilt space is useful to humans as it mitigates heat stress, buffers rain water, and provides opportunity for recreation. To have these beneficial effects be felt in the entire residential environment, built and unbuilt space needn't be separated as if they were oil and water. Rather, a fine-grained network of small but meaningful outdoor urban spaces is required, which demands a mindshift in private project development, urban policy and in urban design.
